Hurricane Helene Disaster Relief

Supply Donations

As we hear updates from folks on the ground in western NC and/or those with close connections, specific needs and potential transportation schedules are changing rapidly. We are encouraging folks who wish to provide tangible support to direct their efforts to cleanup buckets and supplies through Presbyterian Disaster Assistance. PDA has already shipped thousands of buckets to areas affected by Hurricane Helene, including to the Montreat and Black Mountain area, and their warehouse stock is running low. The need is great, and ongoing.

Completed cleanup buckets and smaller donations of things that go in them are both welcome. (The latter are added to buckets by warehouse volunteers.) The list of supplies and instructions for assembling complete buckets can be found here. Donations can still be brought to the Small Church Gathering at Independence Presbyterian Church on October 12, or dropped off at the following places on an ongoing basis. (From there we’ll make sure they get to the PDA warehouse in Little Rock.)

Presbytery of St. Andrew Office
24 County Road 231, Oxford
Drop off any time. If no one is in the office, leave donations on the back patio.

Independence Presbyterian Church
10700 Hwy 35 South, Batesville
Drop off any time. Leave donations under the breezeway between the Sanctuary and the Fellowship Hall.

Leland Presbyterian Church
201 Willeroy Street, Leland
When you have donations to drop off, call the church at (662) 686-7644 to find a time when someone can meet you to receive them.

Presbyterian Disaster Assistance Cleanup Buckets

PDA has significant need for Cleanup Buckets to replenish their stock. They have already shipped out 3,000+ buckets to Helene-affected areas, and the buckets they have in the warehouse for continued response are running low. Instructions for assembling completed buckets are available online here (note the $3 processing fee per bucket).

If you are not able to assemble full buckets, PDA also welcomes donations of individual items that are on the list, which volunteers can use to assemble buckets at the warehouse. Buckets and bucket supplies can also be brought to the Small Church Gathering or the presbytery office, and we will deliver to the PDA warehouse at Ferncliff as buckets accumulate.

Financial Support

If you or your congregation wish to offer financial support to those affected by Helene, here are a few Presbyterian-connected places you can start. Most of the organizations below are sharing ongoing updates on their websites and/or Facebook pages.

Western NC
  • Black Mountain Presbyterian Church’s Helene Relief Fund: BMPC has become a hub for supply distribution in the area, and is providing meals to hundreds of people each day.
  • Montreat Conference Center’s Helene Restoration Fund: supporting repairs and rebuilding in Montreat.
  • Camp Grier (Old Fort, NC): providing free laundry, showers, and twice-daily hot meals to the Old Fort area.
In Our Synod (Living Waters)
  • Holston Camp & Retreat Center (Holston Presbytery – Banner Elk, NC): sustained significant property damage (nine buildings hit by trees, lost two program activities along with docks, still working to gain access to some areas of camp).
